Today in Washington in a ceremony at 1 PM the Tuskegee Airmen will receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor that Congress can give to civilians. Speakers include Colin Powell who received the medal in 1991.

Its about time - these dedicated men fought not only the Nazis but also the prejudice that existed and (to a lesser extent) still does in the military towards minorities. Their heroism and skill at fighting the Luftwaffe interceptors and attacking ground targets was worthy of medals and commendations - but because of the prejudice they were for the most part denied these symbols of recognition.
I look forward to being able to see the movie: Proud. I had never even heard of the USS Mason until it was mentioned in the Ken Burns movie/documentary "The War".
I am not an African-American but want to have recognized the efforts of ALL Americans who fought and served in WWII and all our other conflicts. Let us remember that people who are shot in war bleed red, not white, black or any other color!
