The Washington Post Gets PROUD

"So here you are, a black sailor surrounded by white seamen ready to beat you down simply because you are black. And to sweeten the pot, one of your commanding officers, also white, walks by the fray and calls you the N-word -- then keeps stepping. Who's going to blame you if you kick some butt, then chuck your uniform into the Atlantic?"

Getting PROUD in The Bronx Beat

Here's a story worth a re-read from PROUD's screening at the Tribeca Film Festival back in April. A nice biographical piece on Lorenzo DuFau by Rebekah Gordon. Bronx Beat is a publication of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

In Honor of a Buffalo Soldier

As PROUD is about to open in theaters and on the day Mason veteran Lorenzo DuFau will be honored at the Navy Memorial, take a minute to read this story from today's Washington Post.

Mark Matthews, believed to be the oldest of the remaining Buffalo Soliders, was laid to rest yesterday at Arlington National Cemetary with full military honors.

African American men became Buffalo Soldiers for the same familiar reasons they participated in the American Revolution, the US Civil War, World War I and II. A sense of patriotic duty, a feeling that military service would create opportunity, a desire to show the ability to do any job any white soldier or sailor could do. A chance to get away from the fields or small segregated towns.

These are our American heroes. They did everything that was required for no recognition ... or terrribly belated recognition ... even to this day.

Our friends: The US Navy Memorial Foundation and the National Naval Officers Association

When you are working on tight deadlines with no budget, you have to count on your friends. The USS Mason crew and the movie PROUD has a number of loyal friends who have always been there to "step up."

The US Navy Memorial Foundation and the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) are joining for a special ceremony to recognize Mason veteran Lorenzo DuFau. NNOA and the Navy Memorial will make their presentations to Mr. DuFau, outside, on the U.S. Navy Memorial at 5 p.m., on Tuesday, September 20.

The Navy Memorial hosted one of the first screenings of a rough cut of PROUD back in June 2003 with Ossie Davis in attendance.
